The given chart illustrates the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by each person in four countries from 1967 to 2007.
It is clear that a citizen in UK emitted the largest amount of CO2 than the others during the period of forty years. Moreover, there were downward trends in the average amount of CO2 emissions of UK and Sweden and opposite trends in Italy and Portugal.
In 1967, the average quantity of CO2 emissions in UK was the highest amount, at 10 tonnes per person, followed by Sweden, Italy with 8 tonnes and 4 tonnes in respectively. Portugal was the country where people emitted the lowest amount of CO2 in 1967, nearly 2 tonnes per person.
From 1967 to 2007, the average amount of CO2 released in UK experienced a decrease and stopped at 9 tonnes in 2007, while that figure for Sweden was peaked the highest point at over 10 tonnes in 1977 then dramatically dropped to approximately 6 tonnes in 2007. In contrast, the average amount of CO2 in Italy rose slightly to nearly 8 tonnes, compared with a significant increase to 6 tonnes in Portugal.
