The chart illustrates the proportion of agriculture, manufacturing and business and financial services in the UK economy during a period from 1900 to 2000. Overall, there was downward trends in the contribution from agricultural and manufacture activities, while it is witnessed an opposite trend in the contribution of business and financial services to the economy of UK.
In 1900, agriculture sector which took up nearly a half of total contribution was the main role in UK economy. The proportion of agriculture slightly increased from 1900 to 1950 and accounted for over a half in 1950 then dropped rapidly and hit its lowest point of only 3% in 2000, became the least contribution in the economy. Manufacturing sector which was in second position in 1900 experienced a noticeable decline in the proportion from 1900 to 2000 (from 48% to 20%). The accounting for nearly a fifth in the economy helped manufacturing still was in the second position in contribution.
On the other hand, the percentage of business and financial services which accounted for only a small fraction and was the smallest contribution in 1900 grew gradually in the following century. It got into the first position in the UK economy 2000 and comprised approximately 40% of economy.
