In 2010, there were 750,000 visitors residing on the island. This figure rose to 1.5 million in 2013 and levelled off in the following 2 years. A decrease to 1.25 million in 2016 tourists saw it being surpassed by that of cruise ships before resurging to 1,5 million. Meanwhile, the number of tourists opting for staying on cruise ships oscillated between 0.25 million and 0.5 million in the first three years, before increasing significantly to overtake the number of tourists on island and hit its peak of 2 million in 2017.
The progressive pattern of both categories is reflected in the total number of tourists visiting the island. After skyrocketing from 1 million in 2010 to 2.75 million in 2015, it stabilised in 2016. Subsequently, this figure surged to reach its all-time high of 3.5 million in 2017.
