The line graph compares the percentage of elder people who were 65 years old and over in Japan, Sweden, and the USA over a century from 1940.
Overall, the figures for all countries surveyed experience upward tendencies over the period shown. It is clear that Sweden has the most significant change in its aging population.
In the year 1940, nearly 10% of the total American population was elderly people aged over 65, while the respective figures for Japan and Sweden were slightly lower, at about 5% and 7%. Over the following 70 years, the percentage of 65 and over 65 years old residents in Sweden surpassed that of the US and became the nation had the highest level of the aging population. The American elderly proportion, meanwhile, the Japanese aging population remained at the same number as that in 2000 despite a small drop by around 2% during the first 45 years.
In 2040, the population aged 65 and over is predicted to account for approximately 28% of Japanese, compared to some 25% of Swedish and 24% of Americans.
