The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and
2040 in three different countries.
The line graph illustrates a comparison of the percentage of people aged 65 and more from 1940 to 2040 in three nations, namely Japan, Sweden and the USA.
Overall, it is apparent that the proportion of the elderly in three countries shows an upward trend over the period. Especially, the Japan figure is expected to experience the most dramatic increase among the three nations.
In 1940, the number of senior civilians in the USA contained nearly 10% of its population, which was the highest in comparison to about 7% and only 5% in Sweden and Japan, respectively. In the next 80-year period, the percentage of Americans and Swedish aged 65 and over rose gradually to under 20%. At the same time, the figure for Japan dropped to under 5% before slightly increased to approximately 7% in the 2020s.
In the next 20 years, a considerable rise is predicted in Japan's percentage of old citizens, with over 25% of its population in 2040. Similarly, the Sweden figure is also expected to see the same trend, with precisely 25% compared to about 23% in America, the lowest figure of the three countries.
