The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The line graph compares the percentage of people aged 65 and over between Sweden, USA and Japan from 1940 to 2040.
It is evident that there was a continual increase in the proportion of elderly people in three countries in the period of 100 years. The figure of Japan is expected to change dramatically in the future.
In the beginning of the period, 1940, around 9% of USA population were aged 65 and more. The figures of Japan and Sweden were 7% and 5%. The proportion of elderly population in USA and Sweden rose gradually in next 60 years of 20th century, reaching around 15% in 2000. By contrast, Japanese's over labor age population remained stable below 5% until the early 2000s.
Looking into the future, the population aged 65 and over of USA and Sweden will increase slightly, at about 25% and 23% respectively, lower than one of Japan. Because the biggest growth was seen in the percentage of elderly people is predicted for Japan, with a jump over 15% in just 10 years from 2030 to 2040. By 2014, it will be estimated that the proportion of Japanese elderly people will reach about 27%.
