The line graph illustrates how the number of items transferred by four distinct transport ways changed in Britain from 1974 to 2002.
Overall, it is clear that the quantities of goods transported by road, water and pipelines experienced an erratic upward trend, while the number of items transferred by rail remained almost constant during the given period.
As can be seen from the graph that the largest quantities of goods transported both in 1974 and in 2002 by roads (around 70 and 98 million tonnes respectively), whereas the lowest number of items transferred in tandem in 1974 and 2002 by pipeline (approximately 5 and 22 million tonnes respectively). In contrast, at the beginning of the period, the number of goods transferred by water stood at 40 million tonnes and remained steady during the next 4 years. Over the 4 years, there was a noticeable growth to approximately 55 million tonnes in transported goods by water, after which it plateaued for around 20 years before starting to rise gradually again.
Regarding good transported by rail, the figure showed an erratic downward trend from around 40 to 25 million tonnes in the years 1974-1994. Over the next 8 years, the quantities of goods transported by rail back to the same level as at the beginning.
