Essay topics:

The graph gives information about the age of the population of Iceland between 1990 and 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant

The bar chart compares the age distribution of Iceland's population for each decade from 1990 to 2020. The five age groups are: children 0-14, young adults 15-24, two middle age groups, 25-54 and 55-64 and seniors over 64.

Overall, the population was concentrated in the 25-54 age group, and that concentration increased with each decade. Between 1990 and 2020, the relative number in the two oldest groups changed little, but the two youngest groups fell substantially.

In detail, the 25-54 age group rose steadily and stepwise from about one-third to nearly half of the population. In 1990, the age groups were rather evenly distributed, with the two oldest groups combined making up about a quarter, and the other three ranging between 21% and 32% each. The distribution became increasingly uneven with each decade. The two oldest groups did not change much; it was still nearly a quarter in 2020. In contrast, the two youngest groups decreased from 47% to 24%, with the young adult group falling the most, from slightly more than one in five to less than one in ten.
