The line graph illustrates the urban demographic feature of four different countries in Asia over a period of fifty years, starting from 1970 and forecasts its changes in 2030 and 2040.
Generally, the common trend of the urban population's percentage is upward. However, while Malaysia and Indonesia's figures grew remarkably, those of the Philipines and Thailand experienced some fluctuations. Meanwhile, over the period shown, Malaysia maintained its position as the nation with the highest proportion of city population.
In 1970, people living in urban areas accounted for 30% of Malaysians, which is around 16% higher than that of Indonesia. In the following years, both countries witnessed a noticeable increase in the percentage of city dwellers, especially at the end of the period. Therefore, in 2040, urban residents are expected to become a greater part of the national population when their percentage might reach its peak of nearly 84% in Malaysia and over 60% in Indonesia.
Regarding other nations, 31% of the Philipines’s population lived in developed places while under a fifth of Thailands were city dwellers in 1970. However, after a rise in 1990, the figure of the Philipines decreased to over 40% in 2010. Besides, the proportion of Thailand’s population living in cities remained stable over 30 years, followed by a rise in 2020. Finally, both nations received positive predictions in terms of their city population’s percentage in 2030 and 2040.
