The picture depicts how the horse has evolved for 40 million years to better adapt to its survival conditions.
In general, the modern horse has undergone continuous growth in size to get its current shape with the recent horse appearing to be the most feathery species. Moreover, there has been a simplification in foot structure in the horse’s evolution.
40 years ago, the horse’s ancestor- Eohippus had feet which consisted of five toes with the fifth toe off the ground. Additionally, the shortest tail and the smallest body were also seen in this breed. However, 10 million years later, the horse, which was now called Mesohippus, had developed to show signs of a mane. At the same time, the five-toe foot had transformed into a three-toe one.
Living about 15 million years ago, Merychippus developed from Mesohippus to have a larger body shape and become similar to the modern-day horse. Furthermore, Merychippus run on three toes with a protruding middle toe. After several variations, the current horse species has its three toes combined into a single hoof, a discernible mane along its long neck and the longest tail.
