The number of international visitors going to Australia continues to grow, making the Australian government very aware of the importance of its tourism industry.
The chart below shows the spending patterns of these visitors while they are in Australia.
The given pie depicts the proportion of international visitors' expenditure on seven patterns (education fees; food, drink, accommodation; shopping; entertainment/ gambling; organised tours; transport and other), in Australia from 1997 to 1998.
It can be seen that the spending in each category has not changed much over the three years.
Food, drink, accommodation was the most paying of travellers in each of three years and had a moderate rise over the period. This was the same as education fees. Starting from 10% and then, this figure increased steadily by 1% each year. The expense of transport saw slight growth, accounting for 10% at the beginning of the period, then remaining stable at 11% in two next years.
Shopping is one of the three patterns having huge figures. Controversially, while food, drink, accommodation and education fees had an upward trend, the percentage of shopping fall year by year, 24%, 23%, and 20% respectively. Entertainment/ gambling and organised tours relatively had the same figure, about 5% in almost years of the period.
