People have different views about ways of reducing crime. Although I agree that introducing longer prison sentences is an effective way to prevent more criminal behaviours, I still approve that there are better measures that can be taken to achieve crime rate’s decreasing.
Postponing prison sentences can impose a deterrent effect in the society, resulting less criminal behaviours. Strict policies are necessary for the government to prohibit serious crimes, ensuring the safety of citizens. Implementing a longer prison sentence can enable criminals to realise the seriousness of committing a crim. In the meantime, criminals will have more time for thoughtful introspection and accepting education in the prison. They will gradually realise how bad their behaviours were, how previous the freedom is, and without exposure to society, offenders will feel frustrated and isolated. All of these punishments discourage them from recommitting.
Community services and providing employment skill trainings are also useful measures to be exerted for decreasing crime rate. Criminals will find their values for the society when helping others, and the pleasure that they gain from these good behaviours will motivate them to reform themselves, being a law-obeying citizen in the future. In addition to this, providing employment skill trainings will improve people’s employment rate, especially for those people who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, by achieving career goals with basic employment knowledge, they will have abilities to make a living by themselves, instead of choosing to break laws for their basic needs.
In conclusion, my view is that imposing longer prison sentences is a prohibitive way for serious crimes and reoffending behaviours. As for criminals who commit petty crimes, community services are more reasonable for them. More importantly, the government should provide employment skill trainings for the whole society to prevent people from breaking laws in the future.
