Before us there is a pie chart that illustrates the main causes of land degradation, around the world, and also a table that shows the percentage of destroyed land in three different areas, during 1990.
Overall, the main cause worldwide of land destruction is associated with cattle feeding. In addition, the continent most affected is Europe, but mainly associated with deforestation. In contrast, North America has the lowest damage in the land.
First of all, 35% worldwide is directly associated with over-grazing, while the second and third causes of land degradation are related to deforestation and excessive cultivation, representing 30% and 28%, respectively. Other causes affect only 7% of total land destruction.
Furthermore, Europe, with 23% of its land degraded, is the most affected, with 10% more as in Oceania, and 19% in USA. In, Europe, the destruction of forests represent the main reason, with 9.8%, but also over-cultivation and cattle have a significant impact (7.7% and 5.5%, respectively). In contrast, in North America, where deforestation almost do not occur (0.2%), but excessive cultivation is leading (3.3%), while less than half is associated with over-grazing. Finally, Oceania do not have any problem with cultivation, but cattle is causing the major impact on land with 11.3%, if compared with the minor impact of deforestation (1.7%)
