Overall, money spent on housing was highest in 1950, which was surpassed by food in 2010. Furthermore, while the spending on food, healthcare, transportation and other increased, expenditure on housing decreased in 2010.
In 1950, about three fourth of average expenditure (72%) was made on housing, which was the highest among all. Food accounting for 11.2 percent of the money spent stood second in the list. Less than 7% of expenses were made on remaining categories.
By 2010, food contributed to approximately one third of total expenditure at 34% by witnessing a significant rise of three times over 60 years. Similarly, a five fold, a four fold and a two fold rise were experienced by other, transportation and healthcare resulting in 19.2%, 14% and 4.5% respectively. On the other hand, proportion of expenses on housing declined dramatically by almost 50% to rest at 22 %. Change in the money spent on education was unremarkable as it stood at 6.6 % in 1950 and 6.3% in 2010.
