The pie charts demonstrate units of electricity produced in Australia and France by fuel source in years 1980 and 2000.
From the chart for Australia’s electricity production in 1980, we see that half of the electricity was produced from coal. In the other 50 units, both natural gas and hydropower contributed for 20 units of electricity each. 10 units were produced by oil. Compared to 1980, the picture is very different in 2000, where coal was responsible for most of the electricity production, 130 units, followed by hydropower which contributed 36 units. Use of oil and natural gas reduced in a significant amount, both accounting for 2 units of electricity in 2000.
The electricity scenario in 1980 France was very different from Australia’s. Coal and natural gas each contributed for 25 units of electricity in the 90 units of total electricity production. Oil and nuclear power accounted for 20 units and 15 units electricity respectively, followed by 5 units produced by hydropower. Looking at the chart for 2000, it is clear that nuclear power took over most of the electricity production in France, producing 126 units. Coal and oil each produced 25 units of electricity, whereas hydropower and natural gas accounted for only 2 units of electricity each. The stark contrast of France from Australia is that Australia did not use nuclear power at all to produce electricity in both 1980 and 2000 whereas France used a significant amount of nuclear power.
