Stone Age cutting tools

Essay topics:

Stone Age cutting tools

The two pictures illustrate the basic differences of the Stone Age cutting tools used 1.4 million and 0.8 million years ago.
Overall, there are remarkable differences in terms of the shape and sophistication of these so-called hand axes.
The pictures of tool A depict a cutting tool dating back to 1.6 million years ago. This tool has a length of about 10 centimeters and rough surfaces. It has no appropriate shape crafted for cutting or smashing which proves the poor workmanship of people at that time. Although this handed axe has a relatively pointed end, its edges are not well-processed which could result in discomfort for users.
The pictures of tool B illustrate a well-shaped cutting tool used 0.8 million years ago. This tool has a length of over 10 centimeters and flat surfaces. It has a tear-drop shape with a pointed end and rounded handle. Since it is shaped symmetrical along its longitudinal axis its mass is equally distributed to the whole tool which makes it perfectly balanced. It is also a double-edged axe with edges sharpened to serve the purpose of butchering animals and chopping wood.
