Information relating to how many people will learn English, Spanish and Mandarin, over a decade between 2020 and 2030, is given in the graph.

Overall, English language will experience some fluctuation over the period while the other two will show only positive trends. Another interesting point is that English will stay at the top of the list, despite its fluctuating pattern.

Regarding the number of students who will learn English, it will start at about 550 million and increase by approximately 150 million until 2024. After that, the figure will decrease slightly showing more than 600 million, before starting to grow again. Coming to the end of the period, the number of English language learners will reach the highest point over the whole period covered by the graph, peaking at around 740 million.

Turning to the details of Spanish and Mandarin, it can be seen that, initial numbers will be more than 200 and 100 million respectively. Over the period, Spanish will show a gradual upward trend, while the trend for Mandarin will rise considerably, overtaking the former in 2026. By 2030, Mandarin will have reached the second highest point in the period about 580 million. By contrast, Spanish will have the lowest number of learners, with the figure showing just under 500 million.
