The table below describes the number of employees and factories in England and Wales from 1851 to 1901.
The table illustrates the figures of workers and industry sites in England and Wales in the timescale of 50 years between 1851 and 1901.
Overall, it can be seen that the total number of factories increased over the time surveyed while the number of workers witnessed a downward trend. In addition, male workers were much more than female employees in the period of 50 years.
Look at the table for more detail, in the course of 10 years from 1851 to 1861, although the amount of factories were among the least compared to other years later, the number of workers were massive, total at 477,100 people and 291,780 workers, respectively. In this period, men were the main labourforce in the economy, at 287,100 employees in 1851, which was roughly 100,000 workers higher than that of women.
It is obvious that in the surveyed time from 1871 to 1901, the number of factories observed a dramatic increase from 227 in 1861 to 721 in 1881, which was also the highest number of factories throughout the period. Nevertheless, the number of employees in this time decreased
