The table gives information of number of males and females workers along with the number of factories in England and Wales over five decades from 1851 to 1901.
Overall, a downward trend is reported in the number of employees of both the genders. On the contrary, number of factories showed slight volatility over the given period.
No relation is seen between the count of factories and the number of employees. Total number of employees declined significantly over the years; with the number of men outnumbering the females, in every decade except in 1861, where the number flipped by nearly 29,000 in favor of females (16,000 in females). In 1851, number of male employees was as high as 287,100 with females being just at 19,0000. This number declined significantly over the years, to hit a low of 31,000 and 30,000 in men and women, respectively in 1901. Additionally, the difference between male and female employees tapered from 97,000 in 1851 to just 1000 in 1901.
However, no perfect trend was reported in number of factories. In the year 1851, number of factories was as low as 225 and this increased substantially over decades to reach a peak of 721 in 1881. From this point, the count declined to 600 at the end of the period in 1901.
