A glance at the table reveals clear differences between the major underground systems of the world in terms of ages, scale and carrying capacity.
One interesting fact highlighted by the statistics supplied is that the more recently constructed metro systems were far shorter than the older ones.
Completed in 1863, the LD underground is the oldest compared to other systems listed, and also the longest, extending for 1100 km. Likewise, the second oldest is also the second longest – the Paris metro, built seven years later, is 549 km long. Third and fourth in terms of the total length were the Tokyo and WDC subway, which did not come in use not until 1904 and 1921, spreading less than 150 km. Approximately one-tenth of that, 11 km was the length of the Kyoto MRT system, in the late 20th century.
With regard to the annual carrying volume, the metro system mentioned vary greatly. Transporting 1434 million passengers per year, the Tokyo subway’s capacity is highest, one hundred times more than that of Kyoto subway, which has the smallest capacity, only 11 million. Came as second in terms of the capacity, meanwhile, is the Paris underground, conveying 850 million travelers every year.
