Some people think secondary school students should learn international news as
one of their subjects, while others believe that this is a waste of valuable time.

Whether the secondary school’s curriculum should include international news as a mandatory subject or not is a debatable issue. Personally, I believe learning about the world is of paramount importance to a student.
On the one hand, there are several grounds for arguing that it is time-consuming and useless to study global news. First, secondary students are too young to be aware of what is happening in the world. In fact, this age is most suitable to find out about natural science, including physics, chemistry or animal’s habitat rather than forcing them to grasp the vast and multi-dimensional knowledge such as international commerce, illegal immigration or even wars. Second, it seems that the more compulsory subjects students are expected to have, the higher academic burden they are prone to shoulder. As a result, if they have to spend too much time on studying instead of playing and resting, there will be more and more health-related problems they may suffer, such as obesity, diabetes and even autism.
On the other hand, I would claim that the advantages of learning about international news are hardly undeniable. Having been taught about various issues across the globe enables students to widen their horizon about different aspects of life. For example, by a thorough analysis of what mainly caused the trading war between America and China, learners can develop their understanding of finance, tax as well as law. More importantly, being equipped with knowledge about the world since their young age can ensure students better preparation for higher education and working in their later life. As their skills, consisting of logical thinking and problem-solving, are highly improved, they are likely to be more successful.
In conclusion, teaching young students about international news is a good idea to enhance their knowledge and boost their skills.
