The tables compare five European nations in terms of sales of Fairtrade coffee and bananas in the years 1999 and 2004.
Overall, the UK and Switzerland had the highest sales of Fairtrade coffee and bananas in both years. It is noticeable that all five European countries saw increases in the turnover of coffee, sales of bananas only rose in three countries.
In 1999, sales of Fairtrade coffee in the UK were 1.5 million euros, and the figure for Switzerland stood at 3 million euros. After the following five years, the UK saw a significant increase to 20 million euros, and Switzerland’s sales of Fairtrade coffee rose to 6 million euros in the same year. In 2004, Denmark, Belgium, and Sweden saw slight increases in sales of coffee to 2 million euros or below.
Looking at the sales of Fairtrade bananas, we can see that the UK had the largest sales, more than figures for the four other countries combined, at 15 million euros in 1999. Switzerland and Denmark had sales of Fairtrade bananas at 1 and 0.6 million euros in that year. By 2004, the sales of this commodity had risen to 47, 5.5 and 4 million euros in the UK, Switzerland and Denmark respectively, while Belgium and Sweden saw a different trend, the turnover of Fairtrade bananas dropped to only 1 million euros or lower.
