The given tables illustrate the number of national, local and the whole students average and the proportion of students in both genders, particularly in local and international students in Australian universities in 2001 and 2010.
Overall, what stands out from the graph is that there were upward trends in the number of students. Similarly, the table witnessed an upward trend in the percentage of international students; while the figure of local students bucked the trend.
In particular, in terms of the total number, the figure stood at nearly 39,000 research students in 2001, then increased sharply to around 54,000 students in 2001. Besides, there were about 34,000 local students, which was almost seven-fold higher than that of international students in 2001. Regarding the year 2010, the national students outnumbered international students by 8 to 3, with approximately 40,000 and 15,000 students respectively.
When it comes to the percentage of male and female local students, in 2001, the figure started at 87% in total, including 44% for men and 43% for women, followed by a slight fall of 14% in 2010, particularly with 38% and 35% correspondingly.
