Overall, cigarette usage by both genders declined dramatically over the given period.
Looking at the graph in more detail, after fluctuating somewhat, the percentage of male smokers in Great Britain fell gradually from about 63% in 1948 to about 51% in 1968. This proportion then dropped remarkably to about 33% in 1982. From 1982 until the end of the given period, there was an insignificant drop in the percentage of male smokers to about 21%.
As shown in the second data set, the percentage of female smokers started at 40% in 1948. This proportion fluctuated over the first ten-year period and then returned to 40% in 1958. Although there were some slight shifts over the next ten years, this proportion was approximately unchanged in 1968. From 1968 until the end of the given period, the consumption of cigarettes by females in Great Britain roughly halved to under 20% in 2005 .
