• mention why you can not attend the birthday party
• offer to meet him some other day

Dear Simon,
I hope you’re well. I am afraid, I have a bit of bad news related to the invitation which I received for Maria’s 8th birthday celebration on 28th August.
I really appreciate for sending birthday invitation, but unfortunately something has come up and I’m not going to be able to make it.
So, what’s my excuse? Well, recently I got promoted as a Head of the department in our organization and my company wants me to visit head office for a month, which is located at London for audit purpose.
On a more positive note, it’s my birthday in October and I’m planning to have a small celebration with family and friends. I’ll will be cooking a meal and you with entire family are invited to join the party.
Sorry about last minute changes, but I hope to see you at my birthday party !
