Essay topics:

Learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the present.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience

It is a fact that the future outcomes depend on the present actions and the present actions can be productive if we learn from the mistakes made in the past. There is a contentious argument over whether the knowledge about the past is valuable for the people living in the present. I partially agree with this notion because, although valuable lessons about our mistakes can be learned from the past, keeping the failures in mind can dishearten an individual.

To commence with the view, people tend to be careful if they know what mistakes they committed in the past and try not to repeat them. For instance, students who appear for competitive exams learn from their previous mistakes and try to perform better in their upcoming tests. In addition, people who were betrayed or deceived earlier ought to be cautious in the future. To illustrate, people who lost money in online scams try to think twice before disclosing personal information on any website. Hence, the past is an asset for a successful future.

On the other hand, remembering one's failures can make the person less confident. For example, an athlete competing against a person to whom they have lost in the past can make them nervous which would result in poor performance.

In conclusion, even though the knowledge about the past can potentially help people rise in their lives, it can sometimes hamper their progress. Therefore, I believe that learning about the past has both upsides and downsides because of the reasons stated in this essay.
