The line chart illustrates changes in price in terms of three different food groups in US from 1979 to 2009
It is clear that prices for all food groups and also the CPI increased, in spite of fluctuating throughout the period. In addition, the fresh fruits and vegetables group got the higher prices than the rest almost the time surveyed.
In the year 1979, all prices for food groups including the CPI began at approximately 70. After a decade, all of them tended to rise sharply, although, the prices of sugar and sweets and carbonated drinks were always lower than the CPI. US saw a dramatic increase in the consumer price index from 1989, at the end of the period, the CPI stood at over 200, just lower than the number for fresh fruits and vegetables by about 130, while the figures for sugar and sweets and carbonated drinks had the same trends, they finished at exactly 200 and over 150 respectively.
There was a significant increase in prices for fresh fruits and vegetables from 1979 to the end of the period; they reached a peak of about 330 in 2009, which became the highest point in the whole graph.
