It is widely believed that people are entitled to gain entrance to college free of charge, regardless of their financial situations. This paper will prove that abolition of tuition fees may be counterproductive to students’ achievements, meanwhile student loans and scholarships can be ultimate alternatives to make college more accessible to the public.

There is a likelihood that providing costless college education has adverse effects on students. Due to the fact that a large proportion of students are made to pay for their schooling, they tend to be more serious about their studying and put great efforts to get better results. If they no longer have to meet this financial obligation, it is infinitely likely that they will be indifferent to schoolwork and lose their motivations for studying. For instance, students can play truant or skip examinations since they are aware that flunking a single exam costs them nothing. It’s evident that these behaviours will result in bad scores and students cannot benefit from education.

Instead of using government subsidy to pay for college fees, I believe that the authorities should offer students who cannot afford their schooling low-interest loans. This liabilities will motivate them to devote themselves more to their studying to have higher GPA, and this certainly plays pivotal role on their job seeking after graduation to pay their debts. Furthermore, scholarship depending on academic results should be granted to the elite students. Those who receive financial support will have to remain their top-ranked positions to keep obtaining the grants, because low scores will put an end to their scholarships.

In conclusion, the government should avoid education subsidy as well as make it free for everyone, as loans and scholarships will be viable solutions to make schooling more affordable and guarantee polished performance of students.
