Some people think reading stories in books is better than watching TV or playing computer games for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Books have been viewed as an important tool to promote children’s learning. Although some parents believe that reading books offers more benefits to children than allowing them to access technologies such as watching TV or playing computer games, I am more convinced that books and technologies are equally important for children’s development.

Admittedly, reading stories is one of the common ways to stimulate children’s language and literacy competence. Children learn and memorise new vocabularies through the reading process, which in turn improves their literacy skills. Furthermore, during the story time storytime, teachers and parents can intentionally ask open questions to interact with children, allowing them to express their thoughts and feelings, which could eventually enrich their vocabularies and enhance their language acquisition. For these reasons, books play an essential role in promoting children’s learning outcome.

However, many people seem to overlook the educational benefits that technologies can bring to children. One prominent feature of modern technologies is its advantage in promoting children’s cognitive development and enhancing their sense of belonging. For example, many computer games contain highly complex and abstract instructions, which requires children to develop necessary problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills. In addition, quality educational TV programme such as BBC Animals enhances children’s understanding of the world, providing an opportunity for them to better connect with the community. Therefore, modern digital technologies can be used as an effective tool to reinforce children’s educational learning.

In conclusion, this essay argued that despite books having its advantage in developing children’s language and literacy skills, technological devices can also support children’s cognition and their sense of belonging. They are both instrumental to strengthen children’s learning outcome.
