Agnostids were a group of marine animals that became extinct about 450 million years ago. Agnostid fossils can be found in rocks in many areas around the world. From the fossil remains, we know that agnostids were primitive arthropods-relatives of modern-day insects. However, the fossil information does not allow paleontologists to determine with certainty what agnostids ate or how they behaved. There are several different theories about how agnostids may have lived.

Free-Swimming Predators

First, the agnostids may have been free-swimming predators that hunted smaller animals. It is known that other types of primitive arthropods were strong swimmers and active predators, so it is reasonable that the agnostids may have lived that way as well And while the agnostids were small, sometimes just six millimeters long, there were plenty of smaller organisms in the ancient ocean for them to prey on.

Seafloor Dwellers

Second, they may have dwelled on the seafloor. Again, there are examples of other types of primitive arthropods living this way, so it is possible that agnostids did too. On the seafloor they would have survived by scavenging dead organisms or by grazing on bacteria.

Parasites

Third, there is the possibility that the agnostids were parasites, living on and feeding off larger organisms. One reason that this seems possible is that there are many species of modern-day arthropods that exist as parasites, such as fleas, ticks, and mites. The agnostids might have lived on primitive fish or even on other, larger arthropods

The reading and the lecture are both about birds who can not discern between glass and open air. Whereas the author of the reading states that there are several solutions which can use to prevent harms to birds, the lecturer suggests that non of these solutions can stop birds from injuries. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.

First of all, according to the reading, regular glass is the solution to the problem in a way the glass forms a solid barrier. However, the lecturer disputes this point. He says that these regular glasses have reflection and they reflect act like mirror. Furthermore, he mentions that the birds even do not understand the mirror and when they see the picture of sky or tree in them, they just fly to them.

Secondly, the reading states that buildings' windows could have a design of thin stripes pictured over the glass which help birds see the strips and eschew trying to fly through them. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. He argues that birds perceive these openings between strips, for people in the building to see out, as an open whole and through them. In addition, he points out if this solution want to be successful, they should paint stripes extremely small, so this leads to be dark for anyone who is in the building.

Finally, the reading claims that creation an artificial magnetic filed helps to guide birds away from constructions. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that although the birds have a natural ability to sense Earth's magnetic field, they use them only in long distances travel. In fact, birds use Earth's magnetic field when migrate before winter to warm countries. Moreover, he feels that birds use their eyes and brightness of light for going from one side to another side. Therefore, an artificial magnetic filed have no effect on them.
