Essay topics:

Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons.

In the reading passage, the author proposed that it is better to live on asteroids than on moon or mars based on three elements. However, in the lecture, the professor opposed him separately on the opinions.
To begin with, the author holds an opinion that asteroids have lower gravity, so when landing a space ship, the craft would not be pulled as strongly or as forcefully towards the asteroid, which make landing safer. In opposite, the professor suppose that human being will suffer from health problems in low gravity, for example, astronauts will suffer from muscle loss in space.
In addition, the author suggest that there may be mining valuable metals on the asteroids, which can be excavated by human and the colonists can more than pay the cost of their support by mining minerals and sending them back to earth. On the contrary, the professor said that the cost may be very high and if a large amount of minerals is transported to the earth, the supply market will increase and the price of it may decrease.
Finally, the author proposed an easy reach to an asteroid is the third reason why it is worthy of colonization. However, the professor points out one exception which will make the whole issue more complicated than it was expected. Asteroids are easy to reach but not that easy to return from. When an asteroid comes near to the Earth, it is indeed convenient to get onto it. But paths of asteroids are not predictable, they could get quite far away from the Earth. Under this circumstance, getting back from there would be a challenge.
