burning mirror

Essay topics:

burning mirror

The existence of a weapon called a burning mirror, used by the Greeks to defend from Romans on sea battle, is a hotly- depated topic that have devided historian`s opinions in two specific categories. While the author casts doubt that this certain instrument was really used to catch fire on ships, the lecturer pushes forth the idea that there are some challenging arguments against it.
To begin with, the article notes that Greeks of that time could not been such advanced to come with the idea of inventing a weapon, with high precisity and intensity in the mirror. However, the professor denies it by stating that an experiment made have proven the opposite, making the burning mirror an ingenious defensive way.
Moreover, the writer contends that the equipment might have not guaranteed too much commodity and efficiency, based on the fact that it needed around ten minutes to set fire on the object, only it was not moving. This point is challenged by the speaker by elaborating that the material used on Roman boats have made it easier to explode due to its attribute to catch fire very quickly.
Finally, it is stated in the reading passage that Greeks had another effective weapon to use, called flaming arrows. Consequently, they did not need a common one to shoot at their enemy boats. On the other hand, the professor concludes his perspective by explaining that Roman soldiers were familiar with the old equipment but not with the mirror effect. So, an effective way to defend themselves was needed.
