communal online encyclopedias
The passage provides three reasons to explain the problems communal online encyclopedias have, and simultaneously, prove why they are not as valuable as traditional, printed encyclopedias. The lecturer however, provides counterpoints to oppose the criticisms presented in the passage.
The first point in the passage states that some entries in communal online encyclopedias are not written by experts, which may cause inaccuracy in those encyclopedias. On the other hand, the lecturer points out that no encyclopedia is perfectly accurate. The thing that matters is how quickly the mistakes that the writers made can be corrected. On that note, online encyclopedias are better than traditional ones, due to the fact that editors can revise the inaccurate content quickly.
Secondly, as a refutation to the point about hackers intentionally intruding in the articles from the encyclopedias, the lecturer says that online encyclopedias have certain functions that protect their articles from the hackers, or unscrupulous users. Lots of passages are presented with the “read-only” format, which cannot be revised. In addition, special editors now guard the articles to ensure nobody eliminates important details in the encyclopedias. Therefore, the second point is proved wrong by the scrutiny of the lecturer.
Last but not least, the passage tells us that online encyclopedias give equal space to articles on different, serious topics, which creates false impressions about which information is important. The lecturer deals with this point by giving us the fact that it is a strength to include all kinds of subjects in the articles. The diversity of topics reflects the diversity of people’s interests. In contrast, traditional encyclopedias have not much space, so editors of this type don’t always consider people’s interests onto account. This furtherly contributes to the opinion of the lecturer.
In conclusion, the counterpoints and evidence provided in the lecture efficiently refutes the disadvantages of online encyclopedias presented in the passage.
