The disadvantages of reducing work hours

The disadvantages of reducing work hours

Researchers and economists have been debating whether the option of four-day workweek is beneficial for both individuals and companies or not. According to the lecturer, the debate on this issue is threefold.

First, the professor completely disagrees with the benefits of reducing workforce in terms of companies' costs reduction. Hiring and developing new human resources as well as increased medical and insurance costs will definitely reduce firms' income. Moreover, the more employees are hired the more space they need, so the companies may need to rent more offices; therefore this will add to the firms' problems.

Second, the lecturer believes that work efficiency rate and reduction of workforce are completely unrelated inasmuch as companies will require their employees to work more than the regulars hours they are supposed to. Moreover, senior management, of course, increases it's expectation insomuch as the employees only work for four days per week. This situation will lead to job dissatisfaction and unpleasantness.

Third, The reading says that by reducing work hours, people will have more pastime to enjoy with their families; however, the teacher does not concede with this idea since the part-time employees are always being afraid of losing their jobs. Although they will have enough time for their hobbies, they are at the first line of getting fired by their managers, also senior managers are not eager to promote these employees because they need people who are more eager to work full-time for the company.

All in all, reducing work hours is not beneficial, especially for individuals insomuch as the reduction of their job instability. Furthermore, they lose the chance of promotion as managers always tend to have full-time employees who devote themselves completely to their organizations. Finally, companies do not want extra expenses of medical insurances on people who are not eager to work full-time for them.
