the lecturer talks about the disadvantages of reducing working time
the passage talksabout the benefits of reducing work hours
Four Or Five
The reading passage talks about the regular working hours of employees in the united states and the consequences of its reduction. However, the lecturer opposes the passage , he argues that working hours reduction will not affect the company, economy, or the individual himself, instead, it will have negative results. And he listed several reasons for his assumption
The first reason, for the company , it will be more costing. He states, the new employee requires training and medical benefits, and this costs the company more because a five or four-day working employee has the same medical benefits. Moreover, the company has to buy new equipment for new employers and this will increase its consumption. This contradicts with what the passage says that there will be twenty percent saving because ethe employee worked for four hours instead of five.
Secondly, for the economy, the lecturer states that it will not reduce the unemployment Rates as mentioned in the passage. He explains, because its more costing , the company may ask its four days working employee to work for an extra day instead of hiring a new employee . or the company may add pressure on its employee to do five days' work in 4 days duration. This opposes the idea mentioned in the text, that states, companies will be error-prone.
The third reason, the lecturer says that according to the individual himself, it will not be beneficial. He explains that hour reduction will decrease the job's stability and prevent the employee from getting a promotion because a five days worker is better for management .This is opposite to the passage point of view that says it will improve the employee's live .
