In an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices an international organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological standards by conserving resources and recycling materials Companies that rece

The reading and the lecture are both about ecocertification on wood products. The author of the reading feels that it is unlikely for the US wood industry to take eco-friendly measures. The lecturer challenges these claims by the author. He is of the opinion that the companies will turn to ecocertification in the future.
To begin with, the author argues that the consumers in the United States have great exposure to various ads and commercials. The article mentions that this makes them untrusting when it comes to the claims in the ads. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims the consumers have the ability to distinguish the claims. Additionally, he says that the US market favors independent consumer agencies nowadays.
Secondly, the writer suggests that ecocertified wood will have a higher cost as the companies must pay fees for the wood to be examined. In the article, it is said that the main deciding factor for consumers in the US is price, and therefore they will not purchase the ecocertified wood. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning the consumers will decide on cost only if the prices are vastly different. He notes that the consumers are also more aware of the environmental protection.
Finally, the author posits that the ecocertified wood would only be successful if marketed internationally. Moreover, in the article it is stated that the US consumers are already satisfied with the current products. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that the US market is becoming increasingly conscious of the environment. He elaborates this by bringing up the point that if US wood companies do not make changes, other companies abroad who are more invested in ecocertification will take over their customer base
