explanations about TLP
The passage presents some potential explanations about the possible source of Transient lunar phenomena (TLP). The lecturer refutes all the arguments in the article, and he claims none of them are plausible. His further demonstrations are as follows.
Firstly, although structural errors in the telescopes might cause the false perception of flashlights, the flashes, in this case, would be present in random places due to the random nature of these defects. If this theiry was true, observers would report flashes corresponding to TLPs at many random places. By contrast, TLP is mostly associated with two specific locations on the surface of the moon. Thus, TLPs cannot be attributed to equipment error.
Secondly, meteor impacts on the lunar surface result in flashes indeed. However, the flashlight caused by a meteor strike only lasts for a second. Oppositely, TLPs last for twenty minutes on average. It is possible that meteor showers should be responsible for some of the TLPs. Nevertheless, most of the TLPs do not happen at the time of meteor showers; so, there must be another explanation present.
Finally, while themoluminescence does happen on Moon and some of its rocks emit their own light, this process cannot be the culprit of TLP. Moon reflects the light from the sun at night, and therefore, it is very bright. The light produced by thermoluminescence is far too weak to be distinguished against this bright background. Hence, the thermoluminescence theory is not likely to be true either.
