The reading passage claims that the Genetic modification is now being used to improve trees through genetic modifications. It makes the chance to trees to produce more fruit, grow faster and increase the trees’ persistent against climate changes. However, the lecturer finds them all of them dubious and assert some evidence to refute all of them.
The author explains an example of Hawaii in which the new pest-resistant species of papaya trees have been developed which is persisted against ring spot virus that has various damages on native papaya trees. On the contrary, the lecturer asserts although the benefits of genetic modification are obvious, there are many other disadvantages. By applying this method express in the climate changes are the trees are been affected in a similar manner while some of the native trees can be persisted in that condition.
Furthermore, the author holds the view that genetic modification brings up more productivity and economic benefits to the farmer. In contrast, the lecturer underlines the fact that applying this method has hidden costs.
Finally, the passage argues that genetic modification makes the new opportunity of fast growth of trees in order to produce timber and many application in the wood industry.
While the lecturer brings up the idea that growing trees essentially is needed many resources while providing required resources is not reach easily.
