Marco Polo

Essay topics:

Marco Polo

The article discusses about the claims Marco Polo made in his book , The Travels of Marco Polo stating that they were false by providng three reasons for the support . However the lecturer says that the travel book that Polo wrote is a memoir which is bound to have some inconsistencies . The lecturer says that there is increasing evidence to support their case and refutes all the points the author makes .

Firstly the article claims that Marco Polo lied about his close relationship with Kublai Khan who was a grandson to Ghengis Khan and also about his missing name from the goverment records . The lecturer argues by saying that there was a mistranslation of texts which resulted in such an interpretation and the reason his name is missing from all the government records is because he was just an ambassador which was not note worthy .

Secondly the article posits that Marco Polo lied about his visits to Northern China because he never actually mentioned anything about the Great Wall of China . On the other hand the lecturer thinks that during his time of visit to China the Great Wall was in state of disrepair and hence did not catch his attention . As a result was not a part of the travel book .

Lastly the article says that Marco Polo heard different stores about Asia from fellow merchants while travelling and also from texts found in librariers in the cities . The lecturer opposes this by mentioning that he talks about certain churches in China which have not been covered in any text and also there is no evidence of him visiting a library .
