Question: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading and the listening are both about the devices that help trees grow. The reading proposes several disadvantages of this method, while the lecturer counterargues. She is of the opinion that those disadvantages are not convincing.
To begin with, the writer of the reading proposes that the cost of the device, which cost 25 U.S. dollars each, is too expensive to afford. The lecturer challenges this proposal by mentioning that the devices can be reused after the small tree grows up. Since one device can be reused 20 times or more, the price of it is reasonable.
Secondly, the author claims that it is hard to motivate local people to install and maintain the device they can benefit from since those protected trees are not the source of food. However, the lecturer refutes this by pointing out that the device can collect water for other plants. Thus, it helps the vegetation grows more food. Moreover, the lecturer says that after the trees grow up, the branches of the trees can be used for firewood. As a result, there are several benefits result from using such devices.
Finally, the author asserts that due to the limited ability to collect and converse water of the device, trees might not survive in a reverse environment. Nevertheless, the lecturer says that trees grow long roots to reach water sources underground, once they find the sources, they can survive. For example, 90 percent of the trees still thrive after the device has been removed. Thus, trees can survive in harsh environments.
