In the reading, the author lists three theories to explain the source which cause the odd noises in the ocean

However, the professor challenges each theory mentioned in the reading and she states that there is not enough evidence to detect exactly what is the cause of the strange noises.
The first theory claims that the odd noises are produced by the ocra whales. The professor states that although this theory seems plausible at first but it ultimately highlighted unlikely. She explains that ocra whales live in the surface of the waters, while the submarines are in deep waters. Given the distance between the submarines and the living place of whales, it is impossible for the submarines to hear the odd noises from the surface of the ocean. As a result, the odd noises were not produces by the ocra whales. In fact, these strange noises have another source which is near the submarines not very far away them.
According to the second theory, giant squids produce the strange sounds. However the professor challenges this theory by stating a brief history of date of appearing and disappearing the odd sounds. She explains that the first sounds were heard by the submarines in 1960. After two decades of continuing the sounds, they disappeared in the 1980. While the giant squids continue living in the ocean, so if they were responsible for producing the odd sounds, why the sounds were stopped in 1980? If the giant squids were the true source of producing the sounds, the sounds should have continued during 1980th.
Lastly, the author mentions the third theory which shows that the sounds are produced by the Russian submarines. However, the professor rebuts that these sounds could be produced by another country submarines. The submarines cannot change their directions quickly, on the other hand, the strange sounds' direction were changed quickly and moved around. It is the main reason by which the professor rejects the last theory.
