The reading passage and lecture talk about the turtle excluder device that is incorporated in the shrimpers net to prevent caught of turtles inside the nets. The reading passage criticizes the using of TED for several reasons. The author claims that there is no benefit from the utilize of TED. The lecturer casts doubt on claim made in article. She mentions, TED is crucial equipment in shrimp boat to protect turtles.
First, the author states, there is a limited number of turtles that may attach to net, may be only one each net, in contrast to a lot of shrimps that may caught by net . This point contradicts by lecturer. She says, there are thousand nets in the sea, even though only one turtle may incorporate in net, therefore, there are thousand turtles may cought in these nets every days, moreover this number is very large and endanger to the turtle population.
Second, the writer points to shortening the time that the nets under water give opportunity to shrimper to save turtles which are enter the nets by free them after a short time before they dye. The professor reputes this argument, she suggests that, this is correct only theoretically, put practically it is difficult for government to control the time that can brought up the turtle for air, since there are many nets in the same time which is very hard for patrol to control their time.
Finally, the author claims, there are many turtles have a large size that cannot pass through the TED , therefore, TED impractical. The professor in the other hand illustrates to, it is easy to adjust the TED size to be able to the large turtle to pass through it.
