reading passage was about evidences for recognizing a portrait of Jane Austen - mahdieh
The passage states that a portrait depicting a teenage girl is a picture of jane austin, the famous novelist, and provides three reasons for support, but the professor refutes each of these reasons.
First, the reading claims that the family believes that the picture depicts her, however, the professor doesn't believe so. he states that the relatives who claimed that the portrait depicts jane, did so 70 years after her death, and so they had never met her and their statement cannot be a good proof.
Second, the article claims that this portrait looks like the amateur sketch that jane's sister Cassandra has made, but the lecture claims that although the pictures are similar but the portrait may belong to one her relatives, as there were many of them in their large family. he strongly believes that the picture belongs to one of her nieces named Mary.
Third, the passage states that the style of the painting looks like the style of Humphrey who can be hired to make the portrait of jane. the professor also refutes this claim and states that there is no evidence to believe so and mention the stamp behind the canvas which the portrait has been drawn on. The stamp belongs to a man named William Leg who have sold the canvas, but he was not selling them in London until austin was 27 years old, and this contradicts the idea as the portrait is of a teenage girl.
