Rembrandt

Essay topics:

Rembrandt

The article states that one famous portrait should not be attributed to Rembrandt and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor says the portrait must be a work by Rembrandt and refutes each of the author’s reasons.

To begin with, the reading states that the way the woman in the portrait is dressed is inconsistent with other works by Rembrandt. The author thinks that the coat worn by the woman doesn’t match the other clothes and Rembrandt doesn’t make such a mistake. The professor refutes this point by saying that that mismatch, the collar on the coat, was made by somebody years later than the portrait was drawn.

Second, the article posits that light and shadow, the famous technique of Rembrandt, is not used in this portrait. However, the professor says that if the added collar is removed the contrast of light and shadow is OK in this picture too. According to the professor, the contrast of light and shadow was distinguished by someone who changed this portrait.

Finally, the reading says that the portrait was painted on the glued wood and this doesn’t match the Rembrandt’s style. The professor opposes this point by explaining that the pieces of wood were also added after Rembrandt drew this picture. She thinks that the man who added the collar also added wood because he wanted to make this portrait more luxurious one.
