Rhinoceros
Today, Rhinoceros is in danger of extinction since its horns are so valuable that they attract more and more hunters to poach them and make a considerable profit out of them. The passage suggests three ideas protecting Rhinos from hunters and saving their population. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the effectiveness of the methods proposed by the author.
To begin with, some people suggest that it may be a bright solution to dehorn Rhinos in the wild. In this practice, they cut Rhinos' horns in their habitats to make them less appealing to poachers. The author points out that this approach causes no harm to these animals since it can be done with the help of medical equipment and drugs. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that this method is neither practical nor good for Rhinos. She argues that not only is this method time and money consuming, but also it reduces the chance of survival for Rhinos. It is due to the fact that Rhinos use their horns to dig holes, find food, and protect their territory from invaders.
Adding to that, the author posits that people should be educated about the benefits of Rhinos' horns. The essay mentions that Rhinos' horns are made up of Keratin. So, there is nothing unique or magical about horns. Despite that, the lecturer holds the opinion that people will not pay attention to the information provided by scientists. She argues that this method is unlikely to be persuasive since it is an ancient belief in people's minds that Rhinos' horn is a medicine for many diseases.
Last but not least, the author speculates that governments should legalize the sale of Rhinos' horns and start to sell their abundant sources of horns. In this way, they can reduce the price of horns by intensifying their availability. Adding to that, today, many people do not involve in the trade of horns since it is illegal. The low prices cause by government offers will discourage hunters from selling horns. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that legalizing governmental sales will attract more and more people to hunt Rhinos as it makes a lucrative and legal market. So, she concludes that the effects of this method are unpredictable and may have adverse repercussions.
