Summarize the main points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how

they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage.

According to the text, scholars around the world are unified on the idea that comics are in the

core of the American culture and its product of itself that spread out to the world. But more

studies up to these times give us a different perspective on this concept.

The first point the writer claims is that the first popular comic published in the history was

Hogan’s Alley in the 1890’s. However, there was several other comics strip published in the

1790’s specially in Britain and Switzerland contrasting this very first statement. Also it’s

described how Hogan’s Alley comic didn’t represent a very American nationalism propaganda

since it was written by an immigrant and for most of the part it includes immigrants from

Hungary and not Americans. The second point he addressed it was that “Superman” from

Action Comics was the first popular comic book in the world, also published in America. This

can be inaccurate since “TinTin” was very famous in Belgium sixteen years before the release of

Action Comics was released in America. Also we can take in notice that the author of

“Superman” was indeed an immigrant and not American, he was from Canada.

He also explains that there was a huge influence on Japanese comics from American’s ones and

that is also not really true at all. He contradicts on the fact that the biggest influence its indeed

traditional Asian art so that’s count as well on this whole wrong concept idea of comics being

crafted only from within the American culture. Additionally, Smurfs and Asterix are drown in a

very European style. In other words, comics culture belongs to the whole humanity and it’s not

only in the scope of the Americans.
