The article introduces the topic of why it is a much harder task to send humans to Mars than the Moon, and the three reasons behind it. The lecturer in the listening passage disagrees. She believes that with the right strategy, sending humans to Mars is doable.

In the reading passage, it is stated that the cargo capacity of a spaceship is too limited to support a mission to Mars, and that it would be impossible to successfully send a spaceship to Mars due to this issue. The lecturer, however, disagrees with this, and suggests a solution. The solution is "hydroponics", which means planting plants in water instead of soil. According to the lecturer, this idea not only solves the food and oxygen issue, but also allows the crew to recycle water.

The author mentions a second obstacle, and claims that a mission this long would be physically impossible for the astronauts due to the zero gravity environment that they have to live in. According to the reading passage, the effects of staying in such an environment would have severe effects on the humans. The speaker thinks otherwise, and says that many astronauts have managed to live in space stations with zero gravity for many months. She believes that with the right strategies applied by the crew, such as regular exercising and taking necessary minerals, it actually is possible for humans to survive such a long mission.

Another reason the author brings is that the Sun releases radiation, and in space it Earth's magnetic field wouldn't be able to protect the astronauts. The lecturer comes up with a solution for this problem, and suggests the use of a partial shield, along with a monitor that monitors the sun's radiation release.
