Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading and lecture are both about the mysterious decline of population in Easter island. The author of the reading proposes some ideas that depict the reason behind this. However, the lecturer disagrees with the explanation and attacks each of the claims made in the article.
Firstly, the author mentions that the boat which carries the native people also carried the rats which usually feed on palm tress. As a result, deforestation occur and this made the people complicate to thrive as there are no more food. The lecturer believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends that although the rat population was burgeoning and desertification also happened nevertheless there was no short of food. In addition, most of the inhabitants were fisher and more than half of the food sources came from sea.
Secondly, according to the passage the fundamental cause of population plummet is war among inhabitants. To be more precise, there is evidence of blade and weapons found during exacavation. The speaker on other hand points out that there was material which is sharp but only few were pointed. These materials were probably came from construction work rather from warfare.
Finally, the reading passage notes that population diminish is percipitated from the diseases of outside nation. Furthermore, in 19th century numerous people visited the island consequently the contact with these people cause indigenous people suffer from detrimental diseses. The professor rebuts this argument. He puts forth the idea that eventhough it is true that contact with foreigner results people suffer severely, it was before 19th. There has been proof of increment in population since this century.
As we can see, the author and professor holds very conflicting views on the diminishing of populants. The speaker effectively challenges the writer’s argument.
