The reading and lecture are both about whether a girl sketched by her sister Cassandra is her sister Jane Austen or not. The author of the reading states that although there are not so many records of what she looked like there is one professionally painted portrait by her family which resembles of Austen. The lecturer disagrees. He mentions the proposing evidence hardly proves the girl is Austen and attacks each of the claim made in the article.
Firstly, the author begins by stating that after several years of Austen demise her family had given permission to use her portrait as an illustration that now they are recognizing the girl to be Austen. However the professor believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends that it was after decades of Austen death so the family who are claiming had not not actually seen her in real life. Therefore, this claim of her family does not seem to be convincing.
Secondly, according to the writing Cassandra’s painting clearly resembles the face of Austen. Even though the painting is of adult Austen the details such as her eyes, mouth, body shape as so on are exactly similar to teen Austen. This shows the girl in the painting is surely of Austen. The speaker on other hand points out that since Austen had a joint family there were many cousin of same age as her. Hence, the girl might portray any one of her niece rather than Austen.
Finally, the reading passage also notes that the style that artist depicts in painting is of a kind that exactly matches with the painter Austen family would hire. Not only this, the painter used to be active during the period when Austen was in her teens. The professor rebuts this argument. He puts forth the idea that stamp on back of the canvas shows that the painting was painted by another artist who used to sketch at the time when Austen was in her late 20’s rather than her teen age. Thus, the painting might resemble another girl.
As we can see, the author and lecturer holds conflicting views on girl in the painting. The speaker effectively challenges the writer’s argument.
