Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
In the given set of materials, the reading and the listening is about whether the bees existed on the Earth 20 million years ago or not. The author in the reading claims that the bee nests were not built by the bees as they were not present at that time. The professor counters the reading and explains few reasons in support of the answer.
To begin with, the author in the reading contends that no fossils of actual bees were found from that date to 200 million years ago. The earliest preserves of the bees were found only 100 million years ago. The professor does not agree to this. She mentions that it is not true because there are no fossil remains of the bees maybe due to the lack of the tree resin found in the trees. The presence of the specific trees with the resin might be rare 200 million years ago that is why there are no fossils of tr bees.
Secondly, the author in the reading elaborates that, there were no flowering plants present 200 million years ago because today the bees feed on the flowering plants. There is a mutually dependent biological relationship between the bees and the flowering plants. However, the lecturer is not looking forward to it. She points out that, it is possible that the flowering plants were not present at that time. Also, the bees 200 million years ago feed on the non-flowering plants like the fern and the pine. Later the flowering plants came into the existence and the bees fed on them and since that time there is a constant relation between the bees and the flowering plants.
Lastly, the author mentions that, the fossilized structures found in the Arizona resembles the nest made by modern bees and also lack some details like the chambers of the modern bees nests have the caps which is lacking in the fossilized bees. The lectures refutes to the argument. She states that, the fossilized bees lack the chamber evidence that bees built the chamber. Moreover, the modern bees have a waterproof structure on them which is also present in the fossilized bees which makes them similar.
To conclude, the reading and the listening is abut the presence of the bees 200 million years ago along with the reasons in support and against the statement. The professor strongly counters the claims made in the reading.
